511 – The Productivity Benefits of a Great Workspace Setup

Episode Notes

In January of this year, my wife and I picked up our lives and moved to a new town. It is’t really as dramatic as I’m making it sound, but moving is always a process.

I had grand plans to build an efficient workspace to record podcasts, video tutorials my YouTube channel and a space to get client work done efficiently.

Fast forward nearly 10 months and that still hadn’t happened. I woke up one day and I said no more. No more sitting on a foldable beach chair. My back was KILLING me after an hour or two. No more laptop connected to an old flatscreen tv.

It was time to upgrade and a few weeks ago, I ordered everything I needed. I got a great chair, two brand new Samsung 4k monitors and I spent an entire Saturday organizing cables, mounting power supplies and getting everything exactly the way I wanted it to be.

After a couple weeks of work on this setup, I’m a little pissed at myself for waiting so long to get it done. Every day we have moments when we can get something done, but say to ourselves “i’ll take care of that tomorrow.” Tomorrow becomes tomorrow tomorrow. Before you know it, it’s 10 months later and you still haven’t made it happen.

This new setup has been an absolute game-changer for me and my work. I can sit on this chair for 6 hours with zero ache. I stay energized because my body isn’t compensating for bad posture. I’m sitting at the right level for my monitors now so my neck isn’t hurting. My wrists fall naturally to my keyboard so they no longer hurt either.

Feeling good in my setup keeps me focusing on the task at hand, rather than the pain in my body. I don’t think I have to explain how amazing that’s been for my mental well-being and my productivity.

I have put together an accompanying blog post over on keeganlaniermedia.com where you can check out what the setup actually looks like if you’re interested in that kind of thing.

Regardless of what work you do, I want this to be a little nudge for you to make sure your workspace is comfortable. Save up all the change you have, use an app like Qapital to stash your extra change by using their round-up savings feature. It’s worth doing whatever it takes to get the setup that allows you to function at your best.

I’ve found a huge increase in efficiency with the two Samsung monitors. I’m driving them from my 2013 macbook pro so technically I have 3 screens. I keep project notes, search for imagery or have photoshop open most of the time on one screen while I develop client websites on the other screen.

If you’ve never worked on a dual monitor setup, grab any screen you can and hook it up to test the waters. I can almost guarantee you will have a hard time going back to a single monitor.

To wrap this episode up, I wanted to tell you that I put this process off way too long because I thought the extra money spent wouldn’t benefit me to a point where it made the expense worth it. Take it from someone who just spent the money that it is worth it. Just the physical pain reduction makes it worth it. Add in increased productivity and a setup that just looks awesome, I’d do it again in a minute.

Thanks for hanging out for another episode of Divi Addicts. We’ll see you next week!
