Episode Notes

In today’s episode, we talk about the process of revamping our website for 2020 using Divi 4.0

You know how excited we’ve been since May of 2018. That’s when Elegant Themes announced the new Theme Builder in a sneak peak video on their youtube channel. We all waited and waited… and waited… and waited. Finally, in the fall of 2019, we got the next generation Divi builder we had all been waiting for.

I started playing around with the Theme Builder in a test environment and realized this was everything I ever wanted. It was everything i’d ever needed! I built two live sites using the theme builder in the last quarter of 2019 and quickly realized now was the time to reconstruct the framework of my own website. If you’ve done this before, you know it’s always easier in theory than it ever is in real-life.

I pulled my site from its live environment over into a local development area using Local by Flywheel. Then it was time to get started. I also struggle with leaving things alone design-wise so while I was rebuilding the guts of the site, I changed the visual style as well. Although I’m a fanatic of Samsung phones, I love and respect Apple’s design style. It’s minimal, it’s clean and it eliminates the fluff which I’ve always appreciated.

The structure of content, services and products had to be rethought quite a bit as well. I didn’t want heavy menu structure with a lot of drop downs. I took a heavy cue from apple’s website to see content structure, calls to action and menu structure.

I implemented some new plugins with this version of the site. Advanced Custom Fields Pro made the cut and i’ve implemented new custom post type for Podcast episodes. Easy Digital Downloads had been put in place to handle the process of downloading our Divi Layout Packs and we’ve changed the structure a little bit on our layouts. Previously you could only get the layouts with the monthly membership, but we’ve changed to allow individual layouts to be purchased.

I’ve implemented a podcast importer plugin by secondline themes which imports each weeks episode into the podcast post type. This creates the post type as a draft and allows me to edit the post to fit the final format as it will appear on the website. This process speeds up the workflow!

Outside of those few changes, the functionality of the site remains the same, but the engine has received a complete overhaul. I am still using Flywheels amazing hosting! If you want to check it out, visit keeganlaniermedia.com/getfly for details.

Rebuilding a website can be an extremely time consuming task. This is even more true when you utilize page builders to layout each blog post. One of the most important changes I’ve made with this new upgrade is that I will begin using Gutenberg to craft the main guts of all blog posts. For podcasts, i’ve created a global layout for that post type which uses ACF fields to drop content into the layout. This process speeds up development time and keeps our site looking pretty cool (at least to me).

2019 is coming to a close and next week we have the final episode of this year and the decade. Many people are looking to 2020 as a time to restart the clock, make resolutions, create a side hustle or find happiness. Take it from me, nothing you want in life that’s worth having, will come easy. Be prepared to put in work.

If you put in the work around something you love, people will connect with it. We’ve got a loyal following here on the Divi Addicts podcast. We appreciate you more than you know. If you wanted to do something special for us this holiday season, you could tell your friends about the podcast, send them to our YouTube channel or you could refer a friend who needs a website built to us at keeganlaniermedia.com.

Go shape the life you want. This web development thing can change your life if you have a passion to help people. Let me know if I can help you along your journey. Send an email to [email protected] and tell me your story.

Thanks for hanging out for another episode of Divi Addicts. We’ll see you next week!
